Air-filtering face covering
A respirator is a device worn over the nose and mouth to filter air or supply clean air for breathing.
In medical settings, respirators protect against airborne pathogens: N95 respirators became scarce during the pandemic.
Industrial respirators shield workers from dust, fumes, or toxic gases.
The term also applies to mechanical ventilators that assist or replace breathing for patients who cannot breathe adequately on their own.
