sandpaper

Wood smoothing sheets

Sandpaper is paper or cloth coated with abrasive particles, used for smoothing surfaces or removing material.

It comes in grades from coarse to fine, measured by grit number—higher numbers mean finer abrasive.

To sandpaper something is to rub it with sandpaper: I sandpapered the table before staining it.

Figuratively, a sandpaper voice or personality is rough and abrasive.
