gloss
Shine or explanation
Gloss is a shine or luster on a surface: lip gloss, high-gloss paint.
By extension, gloss can mean an attractive appearance that hides something less appealing: The report put a gloss on the company's failures.
To gloss over something is to treat it superficially or minimize its importance.
Separately, a gloss is an explanatory note or translation, especially in the margin of a text—to gloss a word is to explain or interpret it.
