Study of eyes

Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine concerned with the eye—its structure, diseases, and treatment.

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who diagnoses eye conditions, prescribes corrective lenses, and performs surgery: She went to ophthalmology for her cataract evaluation.

The field overlaps with but is distinct from optometry, which focuses on vision correction rather than surgical intervention.
