amblyopia

Vision development disorder

Amblyopia is reduced vision in one eye that develops in childhood when the brain favors the other eye.

Commonly called lazy eye, it occurs when the eyes don't work together properly during visual development—often due to misalignment, unequal focus, or obstruction.

Without early treatment, the weaker eye's vision may remain permanently impaired: The patch forces her brain to use the amblyopic eye.
