macular degeneration
Central vision loss
Macular degeneration is a progressive eye condition in which the macula—the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision—deteriorates.
It typically affects older adults and is the leading cause of vision loss in people over 50: Her macular degeneration made reading increasingly difficult.
The "wet" form involves abnormal blood vessel growth; the "dry" form involves gradual tissue breakdown.
