A nut is an often-edible fruit with a hard shell that grows on a shrub or tree, like an almond, pecan, or hazelnut.
A fastener that is threaded on the inside to fit a bolt or screw is also a nut.
A person who is wildly enthusiastic about something is a nut (conspiracy nut, football nut).
Such a person with too many such obsessions might be called nuts, and nonsensical ideas are also nuts.
