coupling
System joining hardware
Coupling is the act of joining two things together, or the device that connects them.
In machinery, a coupling links rotating shafts: The engine connects to the transmission through a flexible coupling.
Railroad cars join at couplings.
The word also refers to sexual intercourse, somewhat formally: a brief coupling in the back seat.
In engineering and software, coupling describes how tightly components depend on each other—loose coupling is usually preferred.
