grooves

Tracks in vinyl

Grooves are long, narrow channels cut or worn into a surface—the grooves in a vinyl record, the grooves of a tire tread.

To groove is to cut such channels, or in casual use, to enjoy oneself rhythmically: We were grooving to the music.

To be in the groove is to perform smoothly and effectively.

Someone stuck in a groove has fallen into a rut—the same channel, but viewed negatively.
