addict
Compulsive dependent
An addict is someone who cannot stop using a substance or engaging in a behavior despite harmful consequences.
The word most often applies to dependency on drugs or alcohol, but extends to gambling, gaming, shopping, or anything that produces compulsive engagement.
As a verb (stressed on the second syllable), addict means to cause someone to become dependent: Video games addicted him to screens.
In casual use, people claim to be addicted to things they simply enjoy a lot: I'm addicted to this show.
