nawab

Indian Muslim noble

Nawab is a title of nobility used historically in South Asia, particularly in Muslim-ruled states of India and Pakistan.

The title designated a provincial governor or a ruler of a semi-autonomous principality under the Mughal Empire, roughly equivalent to a viceroy or prince.

After Indian independence, the title became largely ceremonial.

The feminine form is begum.

The related word nabob, borrowed into English, came to mean any wealthy or powerful person.
