nabob
Rich, powerful person
A nabob was originally a provincial governor in Mughal India, then came to mean any European who returned from India having made a fortune there.
The word now refers to any wealthy, prominent, or powerful person, often with a hint of self-importance or corruption: media nabobs, the nabobs of Wall Street.
The term carries a faintly mocking tone.
