mansabdar

Imperial rank holder

A mansabdar was a military or civil officer in the Mughal Empire, holding a rank (mansab) that determined their status, pay, and the number of cavalry they were obligated to maintain.

The system, established by Emperor Akbar in the 16th century, organized imperial administration through numbered ranks: He rose from a low mansabdar to command thousands of horsemen.
