peer

Gaze with effort

A peer is someone of equal standing—in age, rank, or status.

Classmates are peers; so are colleagues at the same level.

In British usage, a peer is specifically a member of the nobility: a peer of the realm.

To peer is a different word meaning to look closely or searchingly, often with difficulty: She peered through the fog.
