governor-general
Monarch's distant stand-in
A governor-general is the representative of a monarch in a Commonwealth realm or former British territory, serving as head of state in the sovereign's absence.
The position is largely ceremonial, with duties including opening parliament, giving royal assent to legislation, and swearing in prime ministers.
The governor-general dissolved parliament and called new elections.
