raj
Empire over India
Raj refers to rule or sovereignty, particularly British colonial rule over India from 1858 to 1947.
The British raj lasted nearly a century.
The term comes from Hindi and often appears with the definite article: under the raj, the days of the raj.
It can also describe any authoritarian or imperial governing style. (Capitalized Raj is a male given name.)
