function

What something does

The noun and verb function has considerable overlap in meaning with the more common words purpose and work.

The function of something is one of the ways it works (brain function, kidney function).

A function is also an event with a purpose: The dinner was a work function.

Such an event might happen in a function room in a hotel.

When something functions, it works or does what it is expected to do: The machine will not function properly with the hood open.

Function also expresses something dependent on another factor: Her privileged position was a function of her advanced education.
