half-mast flag
Lowered memorial standard
A half-mast flag is a flag flown below the top of its pole as a sign of mourning or respect for the dead.
Governments order flags to half-mast after national tragedies, deaths of prominent figures, or on memorial days: Flags flew at half-mast following the president's death.
On ships, the term is half-staff on land in American usage, though the terms are often used interchangeably.
