standing rigging
Mast support cables
Standing rigging refers to the fixed lines, cables, and chains on a sailing vessel that support the masts and remain in place rather than being adjusted during sailing.
This includes stays running fore and aft and shrouds running side to side, all kept under tension to hold the spars securely.
Unlike running rigging, which sailors constantly handle to control sails, standing rigging stays put and is typically made of wire or rod for durability and minimal stretch.
