clove hitch

Post-securing loop knot

A clove hitch is a knot used to secure a rope to a post, pole, or another rope.

It consists of two half hitches wrapped in the same direction, forming an X pattern.

Quick to tie and untie, it's common in sailing, climbing, and camping, though it can slip under varying tension: She fastened the boat with a clove hitch around the dock piling.
