chartwork

Navigational map preparation

Chartwork is the practice of reading and plotting courses on nautical or aeronautical charts—the navigational maps used at sea or in the air.

The term covers measuring distances, calculating bearings, and marking positions: The captain spent an hour on chartwork before entering the harbor.

Chartwork was once essential training for all navigators; GPS has reduced but not eliminated the skill.
