reef knot

Sailor's binding method

A reef knot is a simple binding knot made by tying two ends of the same rope together—right over left, then left over right.

Sailors use it to secure furled sails to the boom, hence "reef" from the practice of reducing sail area.

The knot lies flat and unties easily but can slip under strain, making it unsuitable for joining two separate ropes.

Also called a square knot.
