monkey fist
Dense spherical knot
A monkey fist is a round knot made by weaving rope around itself, typically weighted with a ball or stone at the center.
Sailors use it as a throwing weight at the end of a heaving line—the heavy knot carries the lighter line across to a dock or another vessel.
The knot's compact spherical shape resembles a clenched fist: He tied a monkey fist to get the line across the gap.
