mandrake
Forked magical root
Mandrake is a plant of the nightshade family with a forked root that resembles a human figure.
Medieval folklore held that the root screamed when pulled from the ground and could kill whoever heard it.
The plant has genuine narcotic properties and was used as an anesthetic.
Its humanoid shape and supposed magical powers made it central to European witchcraft traditions: mandrake root, mandrake potion.
