omens

Hints of fate

Omens are signs believed to foretell future events, especially misfortune.

A black cat crossing your path, a broken mirror, an owl's call—these are traditional omens.

The word often appears with modifiers: a bad omen, an omen of things to come.

Unlike prophecies, omens are read from ordinary events rather than spoken by seers.

Something that omens ill bodes badly for the future.
