sabbath
Mandated rest day
A sabbath is a day of rest, especially a weekly religious observance.
The word comes from Hebrew for "to rest" and traditionally refers to the seventh day when God rested after creation.
In extended use, any period of rest or cessation from work: The garden lay in sabbath through the winter months.
A sabbath can also mean a supposed midnight assembly of witches and demons—more fully, a witches' sabbath. (Capitalized Sabbath is the specific Jewish or Christian holy day.)
