uprooting

Tearing from soil

Uprooting is the act of pulling something up by its roots, whether literally with plants or figuratively with people and institutions.

When you uproot a tree, you remove it entirely from the ground; when families are uprooted, they're forced to leave their homes and communities, often abruptly.

The word carries connotations of disruption and displacement: The war caused mass uprooting of civilians.

Uprooting can also mean eliminating something entrenched, like corruption or tradition.
