opium poppy

Morphine source plant

The opium poppy is a flowering plant whose seed pods yield a milky latex containing morphine, codeine, and other alkaloids.

Cultivated for thousands of years, it remains the source of both medicinal opiates and illegal heroin.

The seeds themselves contain negligible amounts of these compounds and are used in baking: poppy seed muffins, poppy seed bagels.
