mandrakes

Humanoid magical roots

Mandrakes are plants of the nightshade family with forked roots that resemble the human form.

This shape, combined with the plant's narcotic properties, gave mandrakes a rich history in folklore and magic—they were believed to shriek when pulled from the ground, and to promote fertility or ward off evil.

The root was used medicinally as an anesthetic and appears frequently in literature from Genesis to Harry Potter: She traded mandrakes for a night with Jacob.
