gallows
Execution frame platform
A gallows is a wooden frame, typically consisting of two upright posts and a crossbeam, used for execution by hanging.
The structure allows a noose to be suspended at a height, with the condemned person dropped through a trapdoor or pushed from a platform.
Though executions by hanging have largely disappeared in Western countries, gallows remains common in figurative use: gallows humor is joking about grim or morbid subjects, especially one's own misfortune or impending doom.
