spell

Name each letter

The noun and verb spell represents two words.

The first is a period of time with a particular feature (dizzy spell, dry spell) or a magical effect induced in someone: He cast a spell over his followers.

To spell a person is to give them a break while you do work in their place.

Secondly, to spell a word is to name its letters in sequence.

If something spells doom, disaster, or trouble, it suggests that these will follow.
