coca plant
South American bush
The coca plant is a South American shrub whose leaves contain cocaine and related alkaloids.
Indigenous peoples have chewed coca leaves for centuries as a mild stimulant and to suppress hunger and fatigue at high altitudes.
The leaves are also the source from which cocaine is extracted and refined.
Coca cultivation remains legal in Bolivia and Peru for traditional use.
