belladonna
Toxic purple-flowered herb
Belladonna is a poisonous plant with purple flowers and shiny black berries, native to Europe and Asia.
The name comes from Italian for "beautiful lady"—the plant's juice was once used to dilate women's pupils, considered attractive.
Extracts have medicinal uses, particularly atropine, which dilates pupils for eye exams and treats certain heart conditions.
Also called deadly nightshade.
