side step
Lateral avoidance move
A side step is a step taken sideways rather than forward or backward, common in dancing, boxing, and athletic footwork.
As a verb, to sidestep is to move laterally to avoid something: She sidestepped the puddle.
The figurative sense dominates: to sidestep a question or issue is to evade it rather than address it directly: The politician sidestepped every question about the scandal.
