basic step
First dance movement
A basic step is the fundamental footwork pattern of a particular dance style, the foundation from which more complex movements build.
Each dance has its own: the box step in waltz, the rock step in swing, the side-together-side in salsa.
Beginners master the basic step before attempting variations or turns.
Once you've got the basic step down, everything else follows.
