snarl

Angry dog sound

Snarl has two distinct meanings.

One is an aggressive growl, typically from a dog baring its teeth: The dog snarled at the intruder.

People snarl when speaking with hostile contempt: Don't talk to me like that, she snarled.

The other snarl is a tangle or knot—in hair, thread, or traffic: a snarl of cables behind the desk.

To snarl is to become tangled; to snarl up is to cause confusion or delay: The accident snarled traffic for hours.
