groundspeed

Speed over land

Groundspeed is the speed of an aircraft or vehicle relative to the ground below, as distinct from airspeed (speed relative to the surrounding air).

A plane with an airspeed of 500 mph flying into a 100 mph headwind has a groundspeed of only 400 mph.

The term matters for navigation and calculating arrival times: What's our groundspeed?
