nautical mile
Navigator's distance unit
A nautical mile is a unit of distance used in maritime and air navigation, equal to one minute of latitude—approximately 1.15 land miles or 1.85 kilometers.
The measurement derives from the earth's geometry, making it practical for charting courses on maps: The ship was twelve nautical miles from port.
