banneret

Flag-bearing feudal lord

A banneret was a medieval knight of higher rank than ordinary knights, entitled to lead troops under his own banner rather than a pennon.

The title was typically granted on the battlefield for distinguished service.

The rank fell between knight and baron, carrying the privilege of commanding other knights.

The term is purely historical.
