Black Death

Bubonic plague epidemic

The Black Death was the devastating pandemic of bubonic plague that swept through Europe and Asia in the mid-14th century, killing an estimated one-third to one-half of Europe's population.

The name refers to the dark swellings (buboes) that appeared on victims' bodies.

The term now applies broadly to any major outbreak of bubonic plague: The Black Death reshaped medieval society.
