gauntlet
Knight's hand armor
A gauntlet is a heavy protective glove, especially the armored kind worn by medieval knights or the thick leather gloves used in industrial work.
To throw down the gauntlet is to issue a challenge—from the medieval custom of flinging one's glove to provoke a duel.
To take up the gauntlet is to accept such a challenge.
To run the gauntlet means to endure attacks from all sides, originally a military punishment where the condemned passed between two rows of soldiers who struck him as he ran.
This gauntlet comes from a different word meaning "lane" or "passage."
