mail

Letters and packages

In American English, as both a noun and a verb, mail relates to the postal system (similar to the word post in British English): Has the mail come yet? Put this letter in the mail. I need to mail a letter.

Some newspapers include mail in their name (the Daily Mail, the Toronto Globe and Mail) because of their regular delivery, like the mail.

Mail occasionally serves as shorthand for email, in terms like mail server, and traditional mail may be called snail mail to make this distinction clear.

Another use of mail, separately derived, is to denote a kind of armor made from interlocking metal rings.
