Throat protection piece
A gorget is a piece of armor protecting the throat, or a crescent-shaped ornament worn at the neck.
Military officers once wore decorative gorgets as insignia of rank long after they ceased to function as protection.
In ornithology, a gorget is the patch of iridescent feathers on a hummingbird's throat: The male's ruby gorget flashed in the sunlight.
