iron oxide

Metal decay product

Iron oxide is a chemical compound of iron and oxygen—what most people know as rust.

The reddish-brown coating that forms on exposed iron or steel is iron oxide, created when metal reacts with moisture and air.

Iron oxides also produce the red and yellow pigments in paints, ceramics, and cosmetics: The canyon walls get their color from iron oxide in the rock.
