laterite

Red tropical soil

Laterite is a reddish, iron-rich soil found in tropical regions, formed by intense weathering of underlying rock.

It hardens when exposed to air, making it useful as a building material in parts of Africa and South Asia.

The term extends to similar iron-oxide-rich deposits elsewhere: The temple walls were built from laterite blocks.
