umber

Painter's earth pigment

Umber is a brown earth pigment used in painting, ranging from yellowish-brown in its natural state (raw umber) to a darker, reddish-brown when heated (burnt umber).

The color itself is also called umber: The leaves had turned to umber and gold.

As an adjective, it describes things of this brownish hue: umber shadows, umber skin.
