gulags

Siberian labor camps

Gulags were the Soviet system of forced labor camps where political prisoners and criminals were sent, often to remote Siberian regions.

Conditions were brutal—prisoners faced starvation, exhaustion, and extreme cold.

Millions died.

The word now applies loosely to any oppressive prison or detention system: The detention centers were described as modern-day gulags.
