gulag prisoner
Forced labor inmate
A gulag prisoner was someone confined in the Soviet forced labor camp system, which operated from the 1930s through the 1950s.
Millions passed through gulags for political dissent, real or imagined crimes, or simply being in the wrong place.
The term now applies more broadly to anyone held in harsh, politically motivated detention: He described himself as a gulag prisoner of the regime.
