sanatoriums
Long-term care centers
Sanatoriums is the plural of sanatorium, a medical facility for long-term illness, especially tuberculosis in the era before antibiotics.
Patients were sent to sanatoriums for rest, fresh air, and supervised care—often in remote or mountainous locations thought beneficial for lung disease.
The word now evokes a dated, institutional quality: The old sanatorium on the hill has been converted to condos.
