one-party rule

Monopolized political power

One-party rule is a political system where a single party holds all governing power, either by law or through suppression of opposition.

The term typically describes authoritarian regimes: Cuba has been under one-party rule since 1959.

It can also describe regions within democracies where one party dominates elections so thoroughly that meaningful competition disappears.
